In the midst of a transformative 2024 presidential campaign, our nation stands at the brink of a historic moment—one that could see the election of the first woman, and the second person of color, as President of the United States. This moment reflects the rich tapestry of America, a tapestry that, as Maya Angelou profoundly stated, “is equal in value no matter their color.”

“Madam America” is a visual exploration of this pivotal time, capturing the essence of a campaign that challenges the very fabric of our national identity. The work is inspired by the potential for a leader who not only reflects the diversity of America but also embodies the strength and unity that diversity can bring. At the heart of this piece is the portrait of Vice President Kamala Harris, a figure who embodies the confluence of gender, race, and power in contemporary America. Kamala Harris stands as a beacon of progress, a continuation of the struggle for civil rights and gender equality that has shaped America’s journey. Her presence in the 2024 presidential campaign reflects the ongoing evolution of our nation’s commitment to justice and equality.
The composition is awash in bold, vibrant colors, symbolizing the dynamic and diverse fabric of our nation. These vibrant hues mirror the multifaceted identities that make up the American landscape, each contributing to the nation’s rich cultural mosaic. Yet, I deliberately chose to remove the color from her image, a decision that speaks to the ongoing and often contentious discussion of race in America. This absence of color in Harris’ portrait underscores the danger of erasing or oversimplifying our complex racial histories. By stripping away the color, I invite viewers to see beyond the superficial identifiers that often divide us. In this monochromatic portrayal, Harris represents not just a person of color, but a leader whose vision and capabilities transcend the boundaries of race.
This piece also reflects the significance of her 2024 presidential campaign, a campaign that challenges the nation to look beyond the surface and to judge our leaders by the content of their character and their ability to bring about meaningful change. “Madam America” challenges us to envision a future where our success as a nation is not defined by our differences, but by our collective identity—a tapestry woven from the threads of every race, culture, and belief that calls America home.
“This piece reflects the significance of Kamala Harris’ 2024 presidential campaign, challenging us to look beyond the surface and to envision a future where our success as a nation is defined by our collective identity.”
As we stand at this crossroads, “Madam America” calls upon us not only to reflect but to act—to embrace the diversity that strengthens our nation and to champion the leaders who will guide us toward a more just and inclusive future. Creating “Madam America” was a deeply personal journey, challenging me to confront my own perceptions of race, identity, and leadership. Through this work, I hope to inspire others to engage in their own reflections and to contribute to the broader conversation about what it means to be American.
In this work, I celebrate the possibility of a more unified and inclusive America, where leadership is defined by merit, and where the portrait of America is one of undeniable strength, resilience, and hope.
